Seven

A few weeks ago, I read about the SoFoBoMo project and I decided it was exactly what I needed to finally have a try at creating a photography book. Although a long-time tempting experience, it always appeared to me as a daunting, almost inachievable task. This project opened my eyes : a limited time-frame (one month), a no-pressure experience (if I can’t finish my book or the result is not of high enough quality to my eyes, I don’t have to show anything), a minimum of 35 photos (low enough to be feasible and high enough to still be a challenge), and finally the motivation to share the experience and the end result with other creative minds.

The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things (Hieronymus Bosch)After many hours of brain-storming, I finally decided on a subject for my book : "The 7 sins". I will try to illustrate this theme through still-lives and portraits, with an absurd, humoristic or surrealist twist. I have convinced one of my friends’ niece, Delphine, to model for my SoFoBoMo project. She is a talented photography student here in Paris, but also likes to be on the other side of the lens, and she has been enchanted by my project and the photo ideas I talked her about. And she will eventually introduce me to some of her friends who would also be willing to model for my project ! This ought to be a quite fun and enjoyable experience because I know Delphine since her early teenage years, and while being a nice, funny and creative person, she’s got a somewhat crazy mindset which nicely suits the mood of the pictures I have in mind (she jokingly defines herself as a psychopath). In a few words, she is a natural artist, and I’m anxiously awaiting to start working with her. I’m leaving Paris on thursday and will be photographing Hong Kong and Macau until May 13th. So I should launch my SoFoBoMo project sometime around the end of May. That will leave me with only one week to finalize the planning of the shooting sessions. The more I think about it, the more I’m wondering whether I’m aiming too high for a one-month project : +/- 35 staged photos with accessories, most of them studio-lit, a few outdoors, having to manage one or more models, and some pictures needing some photoshop compositing… ouch ! And if I have some time left, I’ll try to share a bit of this project with you on this blog.

Well, I still have to get my stuff ready before my departure, so that’s all for today !

    Really interesting idea of yours, the seven sins. 35 by 7 gets 5, that gets five photos on each sin, also this manageable.
    Regarding your last blog, I understand your dilemma, it’s hard to express yourself and you get frustrated when not finding the words and getting a language that feels like the one of a child. It’s like this to anyway, being native in Swedish. It’s however worth it, writing in English, considering all feedback you might get.

    @Ove
    Thanks for the nice words. Yes, my aim is to shoot at least 5 pictures for each sin, but some are easier than others. As for writing in english, I think it won’t be too much trouble as I will speak mostly english the next two weeks here in Hong Kong !
